All anyone wants is to be able to go to bed at night, fall asleep wrapped in a cocoon of comfort and warmth and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and relaxed – so why is that so hard to do..? We recently published a two piece blog on the importance of choosing the correct pillow but, equally important, is your choice of a duvet. We spend almost a third of our lives in bed and there’s the old adage about spending a third of your life in shoes so you should never skimp on either. But where to begin..? We found 13.5 tog duvets for sale online ranging from €14.99 to €1,375.00 so how is anyone supposed to know the difference between what’s a ‘good’ duvet and what’s rubbish or simply exorbitant.
And then there’s the choice of duvets! Do you get a synthetic filling made of polyester fibres or hollofibres or clusterfibres or microfibres? What range of ‘natural’ fillings are available..? Well, there’s traditional duvet fillings made from a mix of down and feather which can be duck down and duck feather or goose down and goose feather. The traditional mix is 85% feather and 15% down but a higher down content (e.g. 50/50 mix) will mean the duvet is softer and lighter. Of course a pure down duvet will be even softer and lighter in weight and the whole idea of a duvet is that you have warmth without weight so you’re not flattened by layers of blankets and bedspreads as our grandparents were!
In more recent years there have been developments in technology that have led to the improvement of what would have been seen as even more traditional materials and this is particularly true of wool filled and silk filled duvets. Because they have different properties to synthetic and down fillings they can’t be given tog values in the normal way but that does not lessen their effectiveness in keeping you warm and cosy. Wool duvets are a case in point… We all know how a pure wool jacket or fleece (or even a scarf) can keep you cosy but a wool duvet doesn’t have the same ‘loft’ or ‘bounce’ of a synthetic or down duvet. What a wool duvet does have is it’s natural properties. Did you know that wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water without feeling wet. This means that it also helps to remove sweat and absorb odours. The fact that it is so absorbent means that you stay warm and cosy but don’t get that ‘sweaty’ or ‘clammy’ feeling – particularly with cheaper fibres commonly available from department stores.
“Belledorm”, our principal supplier, have recently made significant improvements to their wool duvet and it now comes filled with virgin Australian wool. This has many benefits including
- Suitable for year-round comfort being equivalent to 8-13.5 tog
- Hypoallergenic, beneficial for allergy sufferers
- Sustainable and eco-friendly material choice
- Provides a balanced sleeping environment
- Durable and long-lasting
- Easy to maintain, with specific washing instructions

Another duvet that has attracted a lot of attention is our Premium Cotton Duvet with Dual Tog Rating A lot of couples struggle with hot & cold issues at night… One may be too warm and is kicking the duvet off the bed or the other may be too cold. Many women may complain of this and most people associate hot flushes with menopause, but they can also occur as part of your menstrual cycle well before you reach menopause.
The <Premium Cotton Duvet with Dual Tog Rating> overcomes this by having two separate tog values in one duvet. One side of the duvet is a 13.5 tog while the other half is a 9.0 tog offering you and your partner a more personalised sleep choice and coming with the benefit of a pure cotton cover in a superb 230tc fabric.
